Splendor in the Grass 59” x 41” Melinda Bula El Dorado Hills, California Technique: Fusible appliqué and thread painting Materials: Cotton fabric, rayon thread, fusible web Design source: Original design click to enlarge image |
On an outing to the lily farm, I photographed these red beauties peeking out from their long grassy leaves. I was anxious to start this quilt, but had a book deadline to meet. I stared at the picture for months. When the book was almost done, I had some free time, ran to the studio, and created this quilt in one week. Truly obsessed, I worked about nine hours a day and barely stopped to eat! |

| This piece is an embellished symmetrical flower shape. Each part of this lavish flowering bloom was defined with texture, shape, or volume. I attached beads for sparkle, yarns for a fuzzy touch, and long threads for volume…all for our viewing pleasure. |

In the spring of 2008, I visited my friend Cheryl’s farm to meet her new arrivals. This little kid, named Tinker, stole my heart. He was a natural ham for my camera. I knew I needed to turn him into a quilt when I caught this expression on his face. |
