international spotlight IQA Journal Have you always had an interest in art Are there other art forms in which you have been involved or with which youve dabbled Steele I was always interested in art, but I felt so hopeless in art classes that I gave up the idea. My father could draw, and he designed and made jewelry. I have done ballet classes and taught ballet for most of my life. I took up art classes again five years ago with a wonderful teacher who gave me the confidence to start drawing and

Linda Steele About six years ago, I did a yearlong course on design and composition with a textile artist from the Embroiderers Guild. I was right out of my comfort zone, but it gave me confidence and I am still reaping the results. IQA Journal When did you become involved in quilting Was there something in particular that sparked your interest Steele My friend kept asking me to join her patchworkfriendship group, but I only did dressmaking. So, I took a 10week beginners patchwork class. I was

INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT IQA Journal How has your work evolved since you first began quilting Steele I did a traditional handpieced, handquilted sampler as my first quilt. From there, I did every class I could on every technique I could, because I wanted to learn it all I quickly realized that I could never get the quilts finished by hand quilting them. I used to send them out to be quilted by a longarm quilter, but that started to get expensive because I made so many tops. Plus, I hated showing

Steele My quilts do contain birds, insects, and natural elements because they suit Crazy quilting so well. I think I am more inspired by my life experiences, though. My first Crazy quilt was called Crazy About Australia, because we had a German exchange student staying with us, and he was so fascinated by our Australian animals. I had always taken them for granted, but I start

INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT My next quilt was Quilting All Over the World, where I looked at what was unique about other countries. Crazy About Ballet was made to celebrate all of the years of ballet I have done. I made Eastern Elements after my local guild had a challenge using Japanese fabrics. They looked so lovely that I had to make a quilt using an Asian theme. IQA Journal Your quilts have won numerous awardsboth in Australia and in the U.S. Do you have a particular favorite Steele Every award

Linda Steele ability or not being able to translate that idea that is just on the edge of my mind. IQA Journal You also teach quilting classesworkshops. How long have you been teaching, and for you, what is the most enjoyable part Steele I started teaching about four years ago, and I think that I most like the social aspect of teaching. Designing and sewing my quilts takes a lot of solitary time at home, so its nice to get out and mix with others. Quilters are such friendly people, and I learn

INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT swirling around my head, and not having the time to express them. I belong to a group called the Waverley Art Quilters, and we study a different artist or technique every month and then make a small quilt inspired by that artist. It is very rewarding, and I find myself visiting art galleries and buying art magazines all the time.
